Industrial Design:

Mr. Roboto - CAD Modeling and Rapid Prototyping

This project was a quick exercise in CAD modeling and rapid prototyping with the goal of producing a small mechanical toy, and to better understand the opportunities and limits of FDM rapid prototyping. The project was undertaken by myself, Heather Lam, and Yana Klimava. Early on we chose to make a robot that does "the robot" dance move.

This model was made out of styrene to experiment with the mechanics. The counterweight rotates with the head and makes the robot spin around on a conical shaped base.

This rendering is of the base unit and internal mechanisms of Mr. Roboto. There is a switch, battery housing, motor, gear box, and a counter weight that I cast in lead-free solder.

The prototype model was made on a Dimension FDM printer in red ABS plastic. The motor fits inside, making him rotate. This then makes his arms move, and makes him do the robot.

Rendering in Photoworks. He is made of aluminum, and is doing his thing.

Rendering in Hypershot, red ABS.
