Competitions:

Ponoko - Laser Cut Jewelry

I heard about this competition the day before it ended, and decided to quickly make a bracelet. To make a 3D form out of a 2D material, I decided to use a concept I had for a curved table top. This was to cut a relief pattern into the material to end up with a long zigzag shape, allowing it to bend freely. The bracelet would be laser cut out of translucent yellow acrylic and have small protrusions in the relief on both ends to act as a locking mechanism.

These illustrations were submitted to Ponoko for first round of judging. The rendering was done in Photoworks.

The bracelet made it through the first round of judging to the top ten, so they sent me a free laser cut prototype.

The following pictures were taken of the prototype bracelet. They were taken in a parking lot in southern China. These pictures were uploaded to the ponoko website for public viewing and judging.

Catching the light.

The bracelet is a little bit larger than I thought it would be. If I were to refine the form, I would make it a little bit smaller, and adjustable to different wrist sizes.

The bracelet made it to the top ten, but did not win the competition. I feel that if I had more time for formal development, the bracelet possibly could have placed higher, but I am happy with the overall result none the less.
