Industrial Design

Branch Digital Photo Frame

This was a two week project to style an anesthetic machine. The project started off with research into current medical trends, environments, and equipment. The project was undertaken at WorkBeee Design in Shenzhen, China.

Final Presentation Slides:

The machine has been designed to be as compact as possible. This is done by housing the breathing circuit in the main body, while giving access through a sliding panel.

The breathing circuit and main storage space are integrated into the main body of the machine. This is meant to simplify the visual characteristic of the machine, and help with storage.

The brake function is simplified with a single foot switch. To engage the brake, press the switch once and two wheels will lock. To disengage the brake, press the switch again.

All of the function of the machine has been moved to one location. The viewing angles of the screens are fully adjustable with large handles. Both 13" wide screens are fully interactive as touch screens. This feature simplifies the operation of the machine for the main users, the anestheticians and the doctors. Settings such as gas flow levels are changed by interacting with the graphical elements on screen.

This interactive detail also allows for an on screen step by step setup function to ensure the patients safety. All virtual controls are backed with manual controls and pressure meters.

The breathing circuit is hidden from view until it is needed. This keeps it safe from physical damage and gives the patient a less stressful impression of the machine. The face mask hangs on the integrated hook on the outside of the machine. The air hoses are routed through the opening which also acts as a handle.

The Oxygen flush button is located where the anesthetician sits. The secondary set of control knobs and analog gauges are found on the front pane. This panel is slanted for easier access to the operators who are normally sitting down, and so that nothing set on top of the machine will unintentionally hit the knobs.

Selected sketches for the anesthetic project.
